Dumb dumb dumb

Ill. Gov. Rod Blagojevich signed the bill outlawing cell phone use while driving -- if you're under 18 years old.

I got no quarrel with the notion that using the cell phone while driving is a distraction that can be dangerous. But the distraction and danger don't go away on your 18th birthday. If the gov and the lawmakers really feel they pose enough danger to outlaw driving while phoning, they should have outlawed it across the board, for the kids, the parents, the grandparents and the great-grandparents.

Chicago did that, outlawing driving while phoning for everyone unless they're using hands-free devices.

But down in Springfield, that's too much. Lawmakers settled for picking on kids who can't vote.

This stupid law also gives police yet another reason to stop people who are lawfully going about their rounds, since looking like you might be under 18 will justify a stop if you're using your cell.

Dumb dumb dumb.

Another excellent example of why Tommy Jefferson was correct in the notion we need to toss out all the laws every generation and start over.

This is just plain dumb and ought to be beneath the concerns of the Legislature. More and more I think the right-wing loonies are correct about there being a growing need to get the government the hell out of our lives.

Is chatting a distraction while driving? Arguing with your spouse? Yelling at the kids in the back seat? Listening to loud hillbilly music? Let's outlaw those, too. Freedom and personal responsibility -- what are those things? We need the government and the courts to tell us how to behave.

And don't forget to buckle your seatbelt and stick your 8-year-old in a carseat in the backseat -- despite the fact the studies have proven a child big enough to be buckled into a seatbelt is no safer in a carseat; despite the fact that studies have proven that airbags are no more hazardous to children than they are to adults.

Your point about them picking on non-voters and the other faulty logic behind this are exactly on the mark. Just another excuse to pick on kids.
